Best Candidates
The best candidates are emotionally stable, physically fit, and have droopy or baggy eyes. However, this may vary from person to person. This is beneficial for both young and old patients. Ideal candidates are typically at least 35 years.
Preparation for an Eyelift
Discuss any medical condition you have with your surgeon and advise them of any medication that you take. In addition, discuss your procedure thoroughly and ask as many questions as you can before making your decision.
Not smoking for this procedure is very important. Above all smoking can cause circulation problems and make complications more likely, including post-operative chest procedures.
Length
The average time in surgery for this procedure is approximately two hours.
Anesthesia
You have three options: intravenous sedation, local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Discuss with your surgeon and anesthesiologist the best option for you.
Inpatient/Outpatient
This is an outpatient procedure.
Side effects possible
Side effects may include temporary discomfort, tightness, swelling, or bruising in the eyelids or eyes. While it is possible for some to experience dryness, burning, or itching, these side effects are rare. In addition, you can expect excessive tearing and sensitivity for the first few weeks.
There are risks
There is always risk with any surgery. For instance temporary blurred vision or double vision, infection, bleeding, swelling at the corners and around the eyelids, dry eyes, formation of whiteheads or dry eye, small asymmetry, scarring, difficulty closing your eyes completely or permanent vision loss (which are both rare), and lower position of the lower lids. This may mean that you need to have additional surgery. In addition, lubricating drops may help with some complications.
Patients may have trouble closing their eyes while asleep. Although this is rare, it can become a permanent condition. This rare condition, known as ectropion (lower lids pulled down), may need additional surgery.
Recovery
You can start reading again within two to three days. Meanwhile the doctor may allow you to wear your contact lenses after two weeks.
Post surgery, you should refrain from drinking alcohol. However after three weeks, you can resume more strenuous activities or alcohol consumption. After several weeks, swelling and bruising should disappear.
After surgery, your eyes are often lubricated with petroleum jelly and wrapped in bandages. Oral medications can be used to manage pain and discomfort. Subsequently an antibiotic may be prescribed to you to help prevent infection. Additionally, you will receive post care instructions to follow.

Eyelid surgery will ‘turn back the clock’ by opening your eyes, and make you look more youthful and energetic.
