Procedure
A thigh lift is a series of operations that remove fat and skin from the upper leg (thigh), in order to improve contours and reduce bulk.
A Thigh lift is an excellent way to achieve firmer and more attractive upper legs. This procedure is especially helpful for those who struggle with loose, excess skin as a result of weight loss. In addition, it involves the removal of excess skin, fat, and tissue to tone and refine the upper legs.
There are multiple techniques available to plastic surgeons which allow them to customize this procedure to the precise needs of each individual patient. Your surgeon will work with you to create a personalized surgical plan that suits your unique needs and goals.
Types of Thigh Lift
- Inner Thigh Lift – This procedure is also known as Medial Thigh Lift. The incisions go from the groin down toward your knee, and/or towards the back of the thigh area.
- Outer Thigh Lift – This procedure is also known as Lateral Thigh Lift. The incision starts in the groin area and extends outward to the hip and lower back.
- Vertical Thigh Lift – This procedure targets all areas with larger and extended incisions down to the knees.
- Posterior Thigh Lift – This procedure targets the back of the thighs and buttocks. Cellulite accumulation causes the skin to become dimpled and saggy.
- Spiral Thigh Lift – This procedure is known as the 360 thigh lift. It is recommended after major weight loss to reshape all areas.
- Mini Thigh Lift – This procedure only involves an incision in the groin area. Its focus is only the upper-inner part of the thigh.
Length
Depending on how much tissue needs to be removed, it can take between four and five hours. It usually takes at least one position change, re-prepping, and draping to switch patients from one side to the other.
Anesthesia
Anesthesia can be generalized or localized with sedation.
Inpatient/Outpatient
Both are possible.
Possible side effects
Most commonly, wounds will begin to break down at the intersections of the suture lines in your groin due to excessive stretching of the tight closing caused by patient movement. Tension in these areas can also cause widened scars.
There are risks
There are similar risks to any surgery, such as infection and fluid collection. It is possible to get pulmonary embolism.
Recovery
It takes three to four weeks for the body to restrict movement. This includes no stretching of the legs and minimal flexion. Because of the special support garments required for this procedure, it is best to do it in the colder months.
Results
Patients generally tolerate this type of surgery well and appreciate it. It may take several months for your body to completely heal even though the results of the surgery will be visible almost immediately. Return to your level of normal activity gradually per your doctor’s instructions. Trying to do too much too quickly can result in delayed healing or a more serious complication.
Cost of Thigh Lift
Cost of a thigh lift can vary based on your size, surgeon fees, anesthesia used, inpatient (hospital) or outpatient (day surgery), and package inclusions. Please ask your consultant for verification on what is/is not included.
