Procedure
The male breast reduction, also known as Gynecomastia, is a surgical procedure to reduce the size and appearance of the breast. This is achieved using liposuction, or surgically removing the excess glandular tissue. Therefore it can improve the appearance of the chest where diet and exercise have failed.
Over-developed or enlarged breasts are a common condition in men of all ages. It can be caused by hormonal changes, a hereditary condition, disease, or use of certain medication. Similarly this condition can cause emotional discomfort and impair self-confidence. Likewise some men even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide this condition.
The procedure involves the removal of breast tissue or performing liposuction under the chest wall. A small incision (or areola) is made at the lower part of the nipple. For instance if the breast tissue is thicker or more glandular, liposuction may be an option. Furthermore ultrasonic assisted liposuction can also be a great option.
On occasion, repeat procedures are necessary to remove any tissue left behind from the original procedure. In addition, if there is excessive skin in some cases, this may also require a repeat procedure. Subsequently, this may leave a scar.
Preparation for a male breast reduction
Discuss any medical condition you have with your surgeon and advise them of any medication that you take. In addition, discuss your procedure thoroughly and ask as many questions as you can before making your decision.
Not smoking before this procedure is very important. Above all smoking can cause circulation problems and make complications more likely, including post-operative chest procedures.
Length
One and a half to three hours is the average time in surgery for this procedure.
Anesthesia
You have three options: General anesthesia, intravenous and local anesthesia may be used. Discuss with your surgeon and anesthesiologist the best option for you.
Inpatient/Outpatient
This is an outpatient procedure.
Side effects possible
Side effects include temporary swelling, bruising, numbness and/or burning sensations. However these side effects will disappear over a period of time.
There are risks
There is always risk with any surgery. For instance fluid build-up, infection, injury to skin, rippling of the skin, asymmetry or pigmentation changes, excess scarring if tissue has been cut away, loss sensation, contour irregularities, and on occasion the need to perform a second procedure. Subsequently despite the highest standards, complications can still occur. If you have concerns, please discuss them with your doctor.
Recovery
Depending on the extent of surgery, pain can vary from minimal to moderate, and will last from several days to two weeks. In addition, you will wear compression garments to keep your skin compressed after the procedure. You can return to work after seven days of recovery. Following this, more strenuous activities can be resumed after two to three weeks.
You should avoid exposing the operated area to the sun for at least six months to prevent permanently altering the skin pigmentation. Above all, swelling and bruising will eventually subside.
Results
Results are significant and permanent and you will see the full results once the swelling and bruising has subsided. However subsequent weight gain could cause breasts to grow again.
